Harlequin Glory Bower Tree / Clerodendron March 21, 2017

This tree is covered with white, fragrant blossoms in the late summer heat of July and August, and the butterflies adore her.  I often see 3-4 butterflies hovering at the same time over this tree.  After the flowers drop, a beautiful red calyx is left behind, often with a blue berry at the center — two seasons of marvelous interest!

Grows to be 8-10′ tall, 5′ wide, requires half to full sun to bloom.  Full sun.  Read more about it here in Fine Gardening Magazine.

Salvia ‘Maraschino’ December 8, 2010

Salvias are wonderful all-summer bloomers, going right through the first frosts.  Mine start in April and were still blooming away on December 1st.

Salvia ‘Maraschino’ is a reliably cold-hardy salvia, the first red to reliably overwinter in our climate. (Good winter drainage is important.)  A tiny plant grows over the summer into a 2’x2′ mass of red blooms.  Hummingbirds and butterflies love them!

Look at that color!

Full sun, completely drought-proof once established.  (I never water mine.)  They detest soggy soil in the winter.

Painters Palette (Persicaria virginiana) & Hosta April 5, 2010

Painters Palette is a lovely plant that lights up the shade with its bright leaves, splashed with white streaking and a red chevron.  Also flowers in summer with plumes of tiny red flowers.  Quite striking in a mass.

Spreads slowly by stolons and seed to make a large clump which can be divided in subsequent years.  Also drops seed when happy, but seedlings are easy to remove.

foliage grows to 2′ and the flowers float above.  Full sun to full shade.
