Tall Black-Eyed Susan / Rudbeckia ‘Herbstonne’ April 20, 2019

Rudbeckia-Herbstonne-3 (2)

This native plant has attractive cut foliage in spring, and blooms mid-summer with abundant yellow flowers, each with a green cone.  At bloom, she is 5 feet tall.  A great plant for the back of the border.  Full to part sun.

This NATIVE fern grows 3-5′ high and readily spreads where happy.

Can form a dense groundcover if the ground is moist.

Can take full sun if moisture is abundant, otherwise part to full shade.

Beautiful fronds uncurl in spring.  Statuesque presence in the shade border all summer.

Golden Aaron’s Beard / Hypericum ‘Brigadoon’ March 25, 2016

Hypericum ‘Brigadoon’ has golden foliage that brightens a shady spot

This marvelous little plant glows golden.  It loves a spot in part sun, and is a great edging plant.  The golden color brightens your garden from spring and lasts almost all winter before it ought to be sheered back to the ground to promote new growth.  Truly one of my favorite foliage plants in the garden.   Part sun, 10″ high, fantastic in cut arrangements.

Hellebore / Lenten Rose April 9, 2014

The first flowers of spring!

Purple hellebores bloom in early spring, sometimes in February!

Purple hellebores bloom in early spring, sometimes in February!

Hellebores are extremely long-lived perennials that surprise us in late winter and early spring with gorgeous flowers over evergreen leaves.  Highly prized and very expensive, they are a gem in any garden.  Plant by a well-trafficked walkway so you won’t miss the blooms.  Full sun to full shade, they grow anywhere!

Persicaria ‘Red Dragon’ May 3, 2012

Tired of green?  This plant is for you!  Add amazing foliage texture and contrast to any flower bed.  Likes full to part sun for best color.  Bears tiny white flowers in summer, but with foliage like this, who cares?

Purple ruffles Shiso

Growing here alongside chard and Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’ is the beautiful purple Shiso.  I call it ornamental but my mom swears it is used in Thai cooking as well.  Either way, this plant lends fabulous foliage contrast and texture to your beds.  It is an annual but drops seed so you will likely have volunteers each year.   Likes full to part sun for best purple color.
Recipe ideas here.

Butterbur (Petasites japonicus) April 13, 2012

Cauliflower-like flowers emerge in early spring, followed by the main show: amazingly large leaves are over a foot wide, with gorgeous curls that stand like lily pads all summer long.  Sun or shade, but requires more moisture in the sun to prevent wilting.  Slowly spreads by runners to fill a large area.  A rare WOW plant that will make your friends stop and stare!
