Kerria ‘Honshu’ April 21, 2019

kerria w leaves

This shrub has graceful, arching branches just smothered with buttery yellow booms in April, with delicately veined, bright-green foliage.  Blooms the same time as Forsythia but has so much more grace about her, and she blooms in shade as well as sun.  Grows 5 feet high and wide, suckers freely when mature.  Awesome cut flower to bring inside or share with friends.

Queen of the Prairie / Filipendula

filipendula

This perennial has delicate pink blooms in early summer.  Dainty at first, they explode into a puff of pink, a powerful burst of color in the summer garden.  They love wet soil, full to part sun, 3 feet tall in bloom.  The leaves emerge a purple carpet in spring, and mature to a vivid green.   Fantastic cut flower.

Tall Black-Eyed Susan / Rudbeckia ‘Herbstonne’ April 20, 2019

Rudbeckia-Herbstonne-3 (2)

This native plant has attractive cut foliage in spring, and blooms mid-summer with abundant yellow flowers, each with a green cone.  At bloom, she is 5 feet tall.  A great plant for the back of the border.  Full to part sun.

Yellow Twig Dogwood / Cornus ‘Arctic Fire’ April 8, 2018

Awesome color for the winter garden.  Grows 4-6 feet tall but is easily pruned to the ground each spring.  Color is most vivid on new growth.  Lime green foliage and white flowers in spring.  Full to part sun, grows in average soil and also loves moisture.

Sweet William / Dianthus barbatus July 19, 2017

This Dianthus is one of my new garden favorites.  A prolific bloomer with an extremely long bloom time (late April – June) make it a star in the spring border.  Since it grows only 12″ tall, it is a fantastic edger along the front of your beds.   Comes in many shades of pinks and whites, and is a pollinator magnet!  Prefers full sun, but grows well in any soil and is very drought-tolerant.

It is also a great cut flower which is long-lasting in a vase.

Ostrich Fern / Matteuccia struthiopteris June 21, 2017

This NATIVE fern grows 3-5′ high and readily spreads where happy.

Can form a dense groundcover if the ground is moist.

Can take full sun if moisture is abundant, otherwise part to full shade.

Beautiful fronds uncurl in spring.  Statuesque presence in the shade border all summer.

This native tree grows to be 8-12 feet tall and requires full to part sun.  Smothered in pink flowers in April.  Seen here on the south side of a giant oak tree.
