An Annapolis gardener sharing her bounty at bargain prices

Sweet William / Dianthus barbatus July 19, 2017

This Dianthus is one of my new garden favorites.  A prolific bloomer with an extremely long bloom time (late April – June) make it a star in the spring border.  Since it grows only 12″ tall, it is a fantastic edger along the front of your beds.   Comes in many shades of pinks and whites, and is a pollinator magnet!  Prefers full sun, but grows well in any soil and is very drought-tolerant.

It is also a great cut flower which is long-lasting in a vase.

Ostrich Fern / Matteuccia struthiopteris June 21, 2017

This NATIVE fern grows 3-5′ high and readily spreads where happy.

Can form a dense groundcover if the ground is moist.

Can take full sun if moisture is abundant, otherwise part to full shade.

Beautiful fronds uncurl in spring.  Statuesque presence in the shade border all summer.

Native Redbud tree blooms in April

This native tree grows to be 8-12 feet tall and requires full to part sun.  Smothered in pink flowers in April.  Seen here on the south side of a giant oak tree.

Bridal veil (Spiraea) March 21, 2017

bridalwreath This shrub is smothered with plumes of white flowers in the spring.  Grows about 4-5′ high.  Part to full sun.  Makes a fantastic cut flower.

Sweet shrub / Calycanthus ‘Hartlage Wine’

This shrub grows beautifully in full sun to part shade, gets 10′ tall x 6′ wide, and is covered with these large, gorgeous blooms in mid-spring.  Totally drought-resistant once established and easily pruned after blooming to a smaller size if need be.

Euphorbia Robbiae / Wood spurge April 12, 2016

Euphorbia robbiae’s yellow bracts, dark mature foliage, and fresh new growth

DSC_0108Awesome evergreen groundcover for dry shade.  Spreads gently into a mass of beautiful yellow “blooms” (they’re really bracts, not blooms) in spring over lustrous dark foliage.  Great for cut flower arrangements.  Did I mention she’s green all winter?  Completely carefree once established.

Golden Aaron’s Beard / Hypericum ‘Brigadoon’ March 25, 2016

DETA-121

Hypericum ‘Brigadoon’ has golden foliage that brightens a shady spot

This marvelous little plant glows golden.  It loves a spot in part sun, and is a great edging plant.  The golden color brightens your garden from spring and lasts almost all winter before it ought to be sheered back to the ground to promote new growth.  Truly one of my favorite foliage plants in the garden.   Part sun, 10″ high, fantastic in cut arrangements.
